Description:

The following letter dated May 23, 1775, is written by Samuel Parsons to Zebulon Butler, a Colonel during the American Revolutionary war and political figure from Connecticut. In the letter, Parsons is writing to Butler to state his concerns over his ties to Susquehanna county. He states that he has not let go of it and asks that, if a Court regarding these topics is to be held, that it is during a period in August when he can attend. The ownership of the county is likely regarding the early settlement of the region by the land companies, namely the Susquehanna Land Company and the Delaware Company. In attempting to settle the lands named in a charter granted by King Charles II to the Connecticut settlement in 1662, the state would grant sections of the land by various tract allotments. The Lackawanna Historical Society has a deeper explanation of how settling counties and townships were created on their website, where a descendent of the Jenkins family, Rich Jenkins, explains the various lots, share receipts, and business in the company as we can see in the manuscript.
