Description:
The following receipt dated May 18, 1786, is written by Joseph Harrison to Zebulon Butler, a Colonel during the American Revolutionary war and political figure from Connecticut. In the receipt, Butler notes an account receipted for 40 rations, with 4 delivered previously, leaving 36 to be accounted for. These are charged at 9 pence each, and come to a total of 1 pound, 7 shilling, and 0 pence. The word for pence is marked by a shorthand, a lowercase /d/, seen following the “@9”.
Beneath Butler’s receipt, Harrison writes that the payment has been received in Philadelphia, on the date aforementioned.
