Description:

This letter, dated July 1780, is written by William Stuart to Zebulon Butler, a lieutenant colonel in the American Revolutionary War. In the letter, Stewart is writing to Butler after a recent decision to send aid to Sunbury and Cumberland after Butler’s request for aid. Stuart explains that while they have decided to send posts immediately to these two posts, they have not made a decision to send any to Wyoming as of this letter. He continues on to say that he is expecting a delivery of flour at Sunbury, where he expects to meet with the Commissary council and hear further instructions from them on these requests. He concludes by suggesting that Butler send an appeal to “his excellency,” likely Horatio Gates, the President of the Board of War, but leave it up to Butler’s own judgement. There is a reply letter by Butler to Stuart, dated August 1, 1780, found in 10.19. Item 19: Letter from Zebulon Butler to [William] Stewart, 1780 August 1.
