Description:
This letter, dated August 17, 1780, is written by Zebulon Butler, a lieutenant colonel during the American Revolutionary War, to the Board of War members. In the letter, Butler is writing news of the region, mentioning that there has not been any contact or sighting of the neighboring indigenous tribes in the region. He further writes to make them aware of a recent trial of Mr. Conrad Latour, a lieutenant colonel under Captain Schott. He was charged with granting a false furlough to another soldier, plus acts that Butler writes were unbecoming of the title he held. He writes that Schott paid the man through the 1st of July, but that they have taken his commission and clothing to send on to the court. Butler states that he did not want to take the trouble in sending Latour for trial, instead holding it in Wyoming. However, he writes that the court can choose whether to try him themselves or hold Butler’s findings.

Gentelman (sic) [Gentlemen] the Board will be informed by this that we have no news from any Quarter of the Indians nor have we Discovered any signs of them in these Parts since Last Spring. I have Dismissed the Militia. this will be handed to the Bord (sic) [board] by Mr. Latour who was Lieut[enant] in Schotts Corps but has Resigned his Commision I have sent it to the Board for theirm [them] aprobation (sic) [approbation] or Disapprobation to approve or Disapprove Mr. Latour was charged with Procuring A False Furlough for A souldier (sic) [soldier] and other things unbecoming an Officer was had before A Court of Enquiry and the court Give it as their opinion he was guilty of the Whole as he could not be tryed (sic)[tried] hear (sic) [here] I thought it better to take his Commision than to be at the Troubel (sic) [trouble] to send him to head Quarters for A Tryal (sic) [trial] but the Board can do as they Please either to allow him to Resign have him Tryed (sic) [tried] or continue him Capt[ain] Schott has payed him wages and subsistence to the first day of July 1780 Inclosed (sic) [enclosed] I send his Commision and an Account of clothing he has Recieved (sic) [received] and has not Paid for them I am gentelmen (sic) [gentlemen] your most Ob[edien]t Humbl[e] Serv[an]t Zeb Butler Col[onel] Comd [Commander] Board War
