Description:
This letter, dated December 7, 1780, is written by Samuel Hunter to Zebulon Butler, a lieutenant colonel during the American Revolutionary War. In the letter, Hunter mentions receiving a letter from Butler recently that asked if his order to bar supplies from reaching the Wyoming post had been lifted yet. Hunter mentions that there have been no contending orders given to him, but writes that Butler’s inclusion of Congress’ late decision to have the Commissioner of Cumberland send on 40 barrels of flour. Hunter explains that if the decision were to have been stated, it would be in his power to send them on but that the person supposed to take them up was the same who was to have done so when the first order went out, William Stewart. He says this occurrence will keep him safe in the eye of the law and suggests that Stewart does not take the governor’s orders seriously.

Sir
Yours of 25th Inst[ant] I received in
Which you would be Desirous to know if
my Orders in Regard of stoping (sic) [stopping] any Provisions
Purchased by the Commissioners of
Lancaster Cumberland or York Countys (sic) [counties]
for the Post at Wyoming continues in
force, they have never been countermanded
But as you write me that you have leatly (sic) [lately]
received an Order from Congress for the
Commissioner of Cumberland County to
send you forty Barrels of Flower (sic) [flour], its more
then (sic) [than] I can do to let its pass this, Except
the order is Produced by the person you send for
the Flower (sic) [flour] which will keep me safe, suppose
Mr. Stewart makes very light of yeorders I
rec’d [received] from the Governor.
