Condition Note:

Poor. Vinegar smell. The paper is separated into two separate sections due to a tear at a fold in the paper. The paper itself is in okay condition with some tattered edges, browning of the paper, and some unobtrusive folds and stains.

Measurements:

7 ⅞ in. x 7 ¾ in.

Description:

This letter written by Zebulon Butler is in regards to a military order given by George Washington, and how the recipients should meet Washington to receive further details. The letter specifically notes that while marching to headquarters, the men should be respectful and not do damage to the locals and their property.

Transcription:

Gentelmen [sic] in consequence of A late order from his Excellency general [sic] Washington you will march the Troops under of our command in the most convenient rout [sic] to Head Quarters were [sic] you will Recieve [sic] his Excellencys orders for your further conduct. you will be very carefull [sic] on your march to keep your men in good order and regulation you will se that they do not abase the Inhabitants neither in Pars or on Property. All commissary & Masters on your rout [sic] are defend to furnish you with Provision Liquor Carriages & wishing you A good March and A safe Arrivel [sic] Wyoming 24 Feb 1781 I am sir your & Z Butler Col Capts Schoott [sic] & Selin
