Description:

This military appointment promotes Zebulon Butler to Captain of the Eighth regiment of Connecticut.

Transcription:

Thomas Fitch Esq; Colony of Connecticut } Captain-General, and Governor in Chief, in and over his Majesty’s English Colony of Connecticut, in New England, in America To Zebulon Butler Esq’r Greeting, By Virtue of the Power and Authority to me given, in and by the Royal Charter, to the Governor and Company of the said Colony, under the Great Seal of England. I do, by these presents, reposing especial [sic] Truth and confidence in your Loyalty, Courage, and good Conduct constitute and appoint you the said Zebulon Butler to be Captain of the Eighth Company, in a Regiment of Foot, raised within this Colony, to be employed for the better Security of His Majesty’s Dominions in North-America, and particularly in the Possessions of his Conquest there, in such Manner as His Majesty’s Commander in Chief shall judge most conducive to the King’s Service : And to proceed therein under the Supreme Command of said Commander in Chief; of which Regiment Phineas Lymann Esq; is Colonel. You are therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the Duty of a Captain in leading, ordering, and exercising said Company, in Arms, both inferior Officers and Soldiers, in the Service aforesaid, and to keep them in good order and Discipline; hereby commanding them to obey you, as their Captain and yourself to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions, as you shall from Time to Time receive from Me, or the Command in Chief of Said Colony, for the Time being, or other your Superior Officers, according to the Rules and Discipline of War, pursuant to the Truth reposed in you.
