Description:

This letter, dated February 18, 1839, is written by Francis R. Shunk, the tenth governor of Pennsylvania to Chester Butler, a United States congressman and representative of Pennsylvania. In the letter, Shunk responds to a recent request by Butler for a survey of school districts in the state. The itemized list given by Shunk also notes whether the districts are accepting versus not, and those who have read and received their appropriations. According to the numbers presented by Shunk, there are 1,033 schools total in the district, with 824 of them having read and paid their dues for the year. There are also 165 non-accepting districts and 878 accepting.

Chester Butler Esq[ui]r[e] Sir, In answer to your note requesting me to inform you How many school districts there are in the State and how many are accepting and how many non accepting. I have the honor to state. The whole number of districts in the state --- 1033 The state appropriation has been this year paid to 824 But it appears that about 44 districts have not yet red [received] their appropriation, and it is presence are entitled 44 Muhney as near as can be as culaned(?) at present } 868 878 accepting districts } Non accepting districts 165 Whole number of districts 1033 The above statement in Substantially Correct I am yours truly Fr[ancis] R.
