Description:

This letter, dated April 27, 1840, is written by Francis R. Shunk, the tenth governor of Pennsylvania, to Chester Butler, a United States congressman and representative of Pennsylvania. In the letter, Shunk is writing to Butler about an act to improve navigation of the Lehigh River, which he writes that he has copied and included within the letter, though we do not have the items themselves. The act seems to contribute to the general desire to renew the face of nature and inspire similar sentiments in the legislative halls of the region, by Shunk’s words. The act Shunk speaks of may be of or an addition to the earlier movement, started in 1818, in which Pennsylvania Legislature established the "Lehigh Navigation Company" with the purpose of "improve the navigation of the river Lehigh” (The Museum of History and Technology).
