Description:
The letter dated May 16, 1815, is written by Chester Pierce Butler, the fourth son of Lord Butler. In the letter, Chester is writing to his father to make him aware of his arrival at his college, Princeton. Chester explains his travels, parting ways with his brother, John, in Easton as he traveled through Philadelphia to come there on a steamboat he caught in Trenton. He continues on to mention a record of his purchases, including $16.00 travel expenses to Princeton, two chairs for $2.50, one brush for 75 cents, and a pair of stockings. The total of the bill was $9.00, because a pair of his pants were not finished. Chester then goes on to explain that their class has grown, with 25-30 new students arriving, and making the class standing more competitive. He concludes by asking his father or the family to write to him of Pierce, his brother’s, health and send his sentiments on to the rest of the family.

Dear Father
I arrived here safe last Wednesday afternoon
after a pretty pleasant journey. I parted from John in Easton
he went to New York and I by the way of Philadelphia. I staid (sic) [stayed]
two one day in the city and then took the Steam Boat to Trenton.
My expenses from Wilkes-Barre to Princeton bamount to sixteen dollars
and eighteen cents. I purchased one pair of stockings for one dollar & twenty
five cents, two chairs two dollars & fifty cents, one brush seventy five cents.
The Bill for this Session is ninety one dollars which I paid
and took a receipt. The whole amounts to (if I have made no
mistake) One hundred and eleven dollars & sixty eight c[en]ts.
My pantaloons and waistcoat were not finished when I took them
from Brower’s and I do not know what it will require to finish them.
I shall have to purchase some books & I forgot to mention that I
got a Homer— the price was two dollars.
I saw Mr Overton in Philadelphia
who calculated to sail from there on Wednesday morning.
There have between 25 & 30 new students entered college this session
and our class is increased to upwards of thirty.

I shall not be able to write very often for there are so many in the class that to preserve my standing in it I must study harder than I did last session. I wish to hear particularly concerning Pierces [Pierce’s] health I have not heard from John since we parted. Give my love to all my relations not forgetting Grandmother Pierce I am in good health and ever your obedient and affectionate son, Chester Butler Mr. Lord Butler
