Description:

This magazine begins with a continuation of the article The first section is “Naval and Military Chronicle of the United States” which is in every issue of this publication. This edition gives an account of the 1812 battles around Lake Erie. Here he mentions the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, who died in the Battle of the Thames. Tecumseh was allied with the British during the War of 1812. Another major player in this article is William Henry Harrison. At this time Harrison was a general, but would later become the 9th president of the United States. In his time as general Harrison is given credit for winning the Battle of the Thames which is how he got his reputation as a respected military officer. There is also a short biography of Major-General Ripley titled “Biographical Memoir of Major-General Ripley. Eleazer Wheelock Ripley was an American war hero from the War of 1812. Many places were named after him, the most well-known is Ripley, Ohio. This magazine also includes literary criticism for well known works in the early 19th century. This volume includes criticism of De Witt Clinton’s book “An Introductory Discourse Delivered Before the Literary and Philosophical Society of New York, on the Fourth of May, 1814”. Clinton was the mayor of New York City and later Governor of New York. He also oversaw the construction of the Erie Canal. In his book Clinton discusses the inferiority of higher education in the United States. This critic agrees that the United States needs better education, but disagrees with Clinton’s reasons for it.
