Description:

An event program from the July 3 1944 meeting of the Wyoming Commemorative Association commemorating the 166th anniversary of the Battle of Wyoming. This program booklet is about a commemoration event in honor of the 166th anniversary of this massacre. The publication is the transcription of the speech Robert Fortenbaugh gave at the Wyoming Monument in Wyoming, Pennsylvania. Fortenbaugh was the head of the History department of Gettysburg college from 1923 to 1959 and his research was about the region. The Battle of Wyoming is a 1778 battle that occured in the Wyoming Valley. It was fought between Connecticut colonists against the British loyalists and Native Americans. The colonists lost severely, this event is called the Wyoming Massacre. Fortenbaugh focused on the account of Thomas Hartley. Hartley was a U.S Representative and Colonel during the massacre. He did not fight during the battle but his regiment were some of the first responders after it took place.
