Description:

A bulletin for the Tioga Point Museum in Athens, PA. There are two copies of this issue of the bulletin. The focus of this booklet is to discuss the research of local Native American tribes. The first section included is “Early Indians of Our Locality: Algonkins (''Fish Eaters”)”. The Algonkins in this booklet is a classification of tribes who lived in the Northeast region of the United States. The way they hunted and what they believed in are discussed. The second section is “The Andastes'' which focuses on a different group of Native Americans who migrated to the region from the West and Southwest. Their pottery that they brought to the region is discussed. The belongings found at a gravesite were examined by Dr. Harrison Wright, Samuel Wadhams, Harriet Maxwell Converse in the late 19th century are included in the booklet. Dr. Wright and Wadhams worked for the Wyoming Historical Society. Converse was an author and activist for the rights of the Iroquois people. She was adopted into the Seneca nation and given the honor position as a chief of the Six nations. She used her wealth to buy artifacts that could be preserved by state museums. The last section in this article is “Later Algonkian Refugee Tribes' ' in which the Algonkin tribes who moved to the Wyoming Valley region are discussed. These tribes migrated to the Valley after they were pushed off their New England land by European settlers. Finally a short list of books on the history of the Northeast region of the United States is included. Several books by Gilbert S. McClintock are included in this list. McClintock was a lawyer and author from Wilkes- Barre. This series was originally part of McClintock’s collection of publications on the region. A famous author whose work is listed is Carl Carmer, who wrote history books and children stories. A National Geographic article titled “Down the Susquehanna by Canoe” by Ralph Gray and Walter Edwards is the final item on the list.
