Description:

A publication of watercolors and drawings by Carl Bodmer. The acknowledgement was written by Annemarie H. Pope thanking those who worked on this publication. The Introduction gives a history of Prince Maximilian zu Wied written by Karl Viktor Prinz zu Wied. Prince Maximilian zu Wied was a natural scientist who traveled throughout the Western region of the United States and Brazil in the early 1800s. Bodmer traveled with him and these travels influenced his later work. Carl Bodmer drew and painted landscapes and portraits of Native Americans. He did most of his work in the 1830s, but did not gain recognition until the 1890s. John C. Ewers, a historian whose focus was Plains Native American tribes, wrote an article praising his paintings for their accuracy on Native American culture. The last part of this booklet is a catalog of Bodmer’s work.
