Title:

The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography

Description:

A publication of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, with reference to Andrew Hamilton McClintock on page 345. This magazine contains several articles written by historians and entries of the diary of Sidney George Fisher. The first article is “George Lippard and His Secret Brotherhood” by Roger Butterfield. It is about the American novelist George Lippard who wrote popular gothic fiction in the 19th century. This was an account of Lippards personal life, work, and friendship with Edgar Allen Poe. Lippard wrote 23 novels and several newspaper articles, in which he criticized the American Industrial Revolution. The organization Brotherhood of the Union, that Lippard founded to help the working class, is discussed. Many of his works are set in Pennsylvania, such as Valley Forge, Pa. The second article is written by Bradley Chapin titled “The American Revolution as Lese Majesty”. It was about the English laws against treason in the late 18th century. Chapin wrote about how the American Revolution impacted laws on Treason through the era. The next article is written by the historian Charles Coleman Sellers. Sellers was the descendant of the Peale family which is known for several famous artists such as Charles Wilson Peale and Rembrandt Peale . Charles Wilson Peale is well known for painting portraits of many founding fathers, most notably George Washington. Peale was a soldier in the American Revolution and after the war opened one of the first museums in the United States. Rembrandt Peale was also an artist, and Sellers' article is about. Rembrandt Peale was also a portrait artist and also one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of fine arts. The magazine also includes some entries from Sidney George Fisher’s diaries from 1843 to 1844. Several other entries were published in earlier issues of the magazine. Sidney George Fisher was a lawyer in Philadelphia, and owned a plantation in Maryland. He was in support of the Union and his diaries are referenced for insight on the war. Fisher gained notoriety in the 1860’s for writing the “Trial of the Constitution” in which he criticized parts of the U.S Constitution. In the entries included Fisher describes a trip he made to Wilkes-Barre. He met with local lawyer Andrew Todd McClintock. Then parts of letters from John Lewis, an Englishman living in New York, are included. Lewis visited Philadelphia when the Centennial Exposition was being held and wrote to his brother in England documenting his trip. The preface of that section is by William Randel from Florida State University. In “A Private Report of General Braddock’s Defeat” is by John A. Schutz. This discusses the defeat of General Brafford during the Seven Years Wars. It includes a letter from American soldier John Bolling to his son John Bolling Jr. or Bob. The rest of the magazine is book reviews.
