Title:

Pike County Historic Site and Scenic Area Survey Volume 11 Westfall Township.

Description:

A booklet highlighting the founding and growth of Westfall Township of Pike County, PA. This booklet mentions Tom Quick, a local man, who was known for massacring Native Americans. Another notable resident of Westfall Township is the famous philosopher Charles S. Peirce.Peirce was a scientist and philosopher, and made great strides in both fields. He is one of the firsts to study logic gates. This is when tasks are done by switching electrical circuits, which are used today in computers. In philosophy he was known as the “Father of Pragmatism” and is said to have been referenced by Eisentain in his work. Pragmatism is the study of solving problems logically. Peirce built his home in Westfall Township, called “Arisbe”, in the hopes to use it as a school of philosophy. Due to financial difficulties he never opened the school, but lived and worked there until his death in 1914.
