Title:
Bancroft, Lewis & Co Pioneer Colliery, Ashland, PA
Description:
A lithograph by Samuel Sartain displaying an image of the Bancroft Lewis Co Pioneer Colliery on a hillside in Ashland, Pennsylvania. The print was published by James Scott in 1864. The coal chute descends the mountain to a railroad and bridge. The Colliery began during the Civil War and operated in northern Schuylkill County. It employed 400-500 men and it gained a national reputation. The Pioneer Colliery experienced a disaster when an explosion occurred in the mine due to methane gas coming into contact with a flame. Ashland is located in the borough of Schuylkill County and part of Columbia County, Pennsylvania. This region was mostly wilderness dating back into the 1800s, however in 1846 coal seams in veins were developed by a group of miners led by Patrick Devine. This led the area to become part of the anthracite coal region.
Samuel Sartain was an American engraver from a family of engravers, studying the art form under his father, John Sartain. Sartain the younger is most known for his steel engravings on religious subjects and portraits.
For more manuscripts by Sartain, check out The Met’s webpage.
The term sc. following Sartain’s name in the manuscript is a shorthand for the term engraver. It comes from the latin term, sculp or sculpt, which means “engrave,” indicating the original artist of the print. The Printing Museum website has created a glossary of Renaissance Print terminology.
