Title:

View on Broadhead’s creek, in Pennsylvania.

Description:

The etching shows a boat floating upstream in Broadhead’s Creek (Now spelled Brodhead’s Creek). It is encompassed by trees and foliage reaching from the shores. Brodhead’s Creek spans 21.9 miles and is a tributary of the Delaware River. It’s located in the Poconos of eastern Pennsylvania. It flows south and separates the boroughs of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg. The Delaware River is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is the longest free-flowing river on the east coast that spans from New York to Delaware at 282 miles long. Its branches, the West Branch at Mount Jefferson in Jefferson, Schoharie County, and the East Branch at Grand Gorge, Delaware County, join in the Catskill Mountains of New York. These branches form the Delaware River in Hancock, New York and eventually empties into the Delaware Bay. It is referred to as the “Lifeblood of the Northeast” and provides drinking water to about 17 million people. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “Early drawing of the Broadhead emptying into the Delaware River.” More information on this print can be found on the Media Storehouse website. This print was illustrated by Jacob Hoffman and engraved by John Scoles. John Scoles, based in New York City, was an engraver that produced views of cities as well as portraits. He is also thought to have been a bookseller. Scoles died around 1844. More of Scoles’ works can be found here as well.
