Title:

The Cascade, Luzerne County Pennsylvania

Description:

An engraving depicting a stairway of water. In the lower right corner two people are gazing up at the falling water. Trees surround the center of the image like a silhouette. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, “Illustration (Series III, Vol. I, opposite page 233) The Port Folio (1809)” This print was created by Cornelius Tiebout. Born around 1773 or 1777 (according to many sources), Cornelius Tiebout was an American copperplate engraver that began his work at just eleven years old. He apprenticed with New York silversmith John Burger, who lived from 1747-1828. Around 1789, Tiebout and Berger’s son published a songbook called Amphion. Tiebout died around 1832. Some more of Cornelias Tiebout’s work can also be found on the National Portrait Gallery’s website.
