Description:

An engraving depicting the Race Bridge in Philadelphia. For more information on this work visit the American Philosophical Society Museum Website. This print was illustrated by Charles Burton Barber and engraved by Joseph Andrews. Born in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk in 1845, Charles Burton Barber was a British painter well known for his painting of children and their pets. However, Barber also created landscapes as well. He studied at the Royal Academy in London at the age of 18 and received a silver medal for drawing in 1864. He exhibited his work for the first time there in 1866. During his life, he was known as one of Britain’s finest animal painters and was even commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint her grandchildren and dogs. He was also commissioned by the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, to paint his pets. Much of his paintings can be found in the Royal Collection. He was eventually elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883. Joseph Andrews was an etcher and engraver born in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1806, where he eventually trained and worked in Boston. During 1835-1836, he traveled to London, England to study engraving with Joseph Goodyear. He died in 1841.

The estimation of the dates has been assigned by comparisons with similar manuscripts on the Risd Museum’s web page, dating their manuscript in 1831 and the Philadelphia Print Shop’s web page dating their manuscript in 1843.
