A lithograph of some people surrounding a structure in Forty Fort.
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “The scene of the surrender of the Wyoming settlers on July 4, 1778, the day after the Wyoming Massacre.” The Battle of Wyoming or Wyoming Massacre took place on July 3, 1778 in the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. It was a military engagement between the Patriot militia and a force of British Loyalist soldiers and Iroquois warriors that occured at the same time as the American Revolutionary War. About 300 Patriots died, the Americans suffering a great defeat. Many were killed by the Iroquois as they fled the battlefield or were taken prisoner. Much looting and burning of buildings transpired all over the Wyoming Valley. Many inhabitants of the area fled to the Pocono Mountains, Stroudsburg, Easton, and to the Susquehanna River in Sunbury. An inaccurate newspaper report claimed that many women and children had been reportedly massacred and unfortunately taken as fact for many years after. Forty Fort is located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Forty settlers from Westmoreland, Connecticut established a fort near the Susquehanna River in 1770. This gave the town its name and this area had played an important role during the Revolutionary War. This print was created by E. L. Dana.
