Title:
“Falls on the Lackawanna, Pa.”
Description:
A colored print depicting waterfalls on the Lackawanna River. There is a house located in the upper left of the image as it looks over the falls. The Lackawanna River is a tributary of the Susquehanna River, spanning 42 miles long. Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, it flows through the Pocono Mountains, a central area of coal mining in the United States. Beginning in Wayne County, it eventually ends in Luzerne County. The name refers to the Lenape word meaning “stream that forks.”
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, “Lithograph published by F. Michelin, 11 Nassau Street, New York. F. Michelin was at 11 Nassau Street from the year 1846 to 1851. Whitefield exhibited at The National Academy in 1852 and 1854. Notwithstanding the title of the print the Lackawanna River does not flow near Tunkhannock.” This print was created by Edwin Whitefield and published by Francis Michelin.
