Description:

A colored engraving depicting some homes on the shore of the Lehigh Water Gap. There are large mountains that the settlement is placed between. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “Southeast view of the Lehigh Water Gap.” This engraving comes from the Philadelphia Magazine, this specific excerpt published in September 1812. Located in Lehigh Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Water Gap is an opening in the blue ridge, part of the Allegheny mountains, which winds through this terrain of steep slopes and heights. There are also many tributary outlets that eventually lead it to empty into the Delaware in Easton, Pennsylvania. Many people travel this scenic area. A landmark known to most in Devil’s Pulpit, a large pile of rocks emerging from the surrounding forest. The date has been ascertained by comparison with a manuscript found through eBay.
