Description:

A lithograph that depicts Jim Thorpe, aka Mauch Chunk, then a small town. There are some rafts in the river and some minecarts on a rail. Many structures and buildings are present ascending the valley. Referred to as the “Switzerland of America,” Mauch Chunk was known for its mountainous scenic views along the line of the Switchback Railroad and Lehigh Valley Railroad. It is still attracting tourists to see the beautiful, mountainous views. The Narrows was a spot in particular that people would visit for the scenic view. Now referred to as Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania since 1954, Mauch Chunk is located in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. It is known for the burial site of the Native American athlete, Jim Thorpe. It is settled in the Pocono Mountains about 29 miles northwest of Allentown. This print was created by Thomas Sinclair. Thomas Sinclair was born in the Orkney Islands of Northern Scotland in 1807. He was one of the premier Philadelphia lithographers of this era, but he specialized in chromolithography. He trained in Edinburgh and later emigrated to the United States in c. 1830. He worked in New York and Philadelphia, and ultimately settled in Philadelphia in 1839. He worked at the lithographic shop of John Collins before taking charge of the establishment in 1840. He produced all kinds of lithographs throughout his career including maps, advertisements, city and landscape views, sheet music covers, portraiture, political cartoons, certificates, and book illustrations.
