Nazareth Hall.
Description:
A colored lithograph of Nazareth Hall, located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It is seen in the center with similar buildings lining each side of it. People are going about their day and enjoying what seems to be a beautiful day. Nazareth is located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was named after the Biblical town in Israel. Founded in 1740 by Moravian immigrants from Germany, and was originally Moravian by charter. Other faiths were not allowed in this German Protestant Community. These people are where the term “Pennsylvania Dutch” stems from.
Education was important to the Moravian Church. The Moravian Theological Seminary was founded in October 1807, its first class being taught by two instructors. There were three students of this class, William Henry VanVleck, Peter Wolle, and the creator of this print, Samuel Reinke. These members all became bishops in the Moravian Church.
“The collection includes art by the first three graduates of the Moravian Theological Seminary, which began on Nazareth Hall grounds and merged with Moravian College. William Henry Van Vleck, Samuel Reinke and Peter Wolle graduated from the seminary in 1810, taught at Nazareth Hall, became bishops between 1836 and 1858, and died in Bethlehem. Before becoming the first Moravian clergy to be trained theologically in the United States, they drew somewhat quixotic landscapes, with trees as moody as people and huts as respectable as castles.”
Samuel Reinke was born on August 12, 1791 in Lititz, Pennsylvania, being one of the first to graduate from the Moravian Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor and later in 1858 consecrated to the episcopacy. He later became blind and consequently retired. After foregoing an eye surgery, some of his sight was restored and returned to preaching. He died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on January 21, 1875.
