Description:
A lithograph print of a painting of the Columbia Bridge that crosses the Susquehanna River published for Hermann Julius Meyer. The Susquehanna River is a major river located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and covers much of Pennsylvania. It stretches 444 miles long, making it the longest river on the East Coast, and the 16th largest river in the United States. The river is made up of two main branches including the North Branch and the West Branch. The river drains 27,500 square miles that includes much of Pennsylvania. The river empties into the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay.
Born in Gotha, Germany on April 4, 1826, Hermann Julius Meyer was a German publisher. He was the son of publisher Joseph Meyer who lived from 1796-1856. Hermann took over his father’s publishing company, Bibliographisches Institut, after his father’s death. He moved the headquarters to Leipzig in 1784 and gave the business to his sons Arndt and Hans in 1884.
