Title:

Wright’s Ferry on the Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

Description:

An engraving depicting Wright’s Ferry as it travels in the Susquehanna River. The image is surrounded by trees that give focus to the shoreline. The Susquehanna River is a major river located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and covers much of Pennsylvania. It stretches 444 miles long, making it the longest river on the East Coast, and the 16th largest river in the United States. The river is made up of two main branches including the North Branch and the West Branch. The river drains 27,500 square miles that includes much of Pennsylvania. The river empties into the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “In the Stokes Collection, New York Library (No. P 1808-E-31) is an impression of the original print which was copied by Cooke in making the above engraving. The original from which Cooke made the copy is described as follows: ‘Wright’s Ferry on the Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. Drawn by G. Beck. Engraved by T. Cartwright. Published January 1, 1809, by Geo. Nightingale, London. Aquatint, in colors. Size 22 ¾ x 16 ½. Date depicted: Probably 1808. Date issued: Jan. 1, 1809. Provenance: One of the Atkins and Nightingale Series of American Views.’” The engraver of the print, George Cooke, was born in St. Mary’s County, Maryland on March 14 or 17, 1793. He entered into many businesses at St. Marys from 1810-1812, then to Georgetown, D.C. from 1812-1816, and Richmond, Virginia from 1816-1818. He traveled west in 1818 and later returned to Washington to study painting with Charles Bird King in 1819-1820. He opened the National Gallery of Painting with the backing of Daniel Pratt in 1844-1849. He died March 26, 1849 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
