Title:

Southeast View of Towanda

Description:

An engraving of a landscape depicting Towanda. Roadways are evident as well as a large settlement in the background. “From the hill near the Wysox road. In the foreground is the bed of the North Branch Canal, laid bare (in 1841) by the destruction of the dam below. Over the centre of the bridge is the Presbyterian Church; on the hill is the Academy; and on the right the Methodist and the Episcopal Churches.”According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, by Gilbert S. McClintock, this engraving is depicting the “Southeast view of Towanda.” Towanda is located in Bradford County, Pennsylvania and was settled in 1784. It is located 66 miles northwest of Wilkes-Barre. In the Algonquin language, Towanda translates to “burial grounds.” “Towanda was first laid out in 1812, by Mr. William Means, who resided here at the time. The act organizing the county directed the courts to be held at his house until public buildings were erected. [...] The village for several years was called Meansville, and so marked upon the maps. Other names were occasionally tried on, but did not fit well enough to wear long. Towanda was incorporated as a borough in 1828, and its name was thus permanently fixed.”
