Title:
The Umbrella-Tree
Description:
Wood engraving of a bridge going over a creek. On the other side of this creek, there are two buildings and three people. One of the people is riding on a horse.
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, by Gilbert S. McClintock, “A famous landmark, also known as the signal-tree, grew on the mountain west of the Valley, about four miles from its head. The tree was a ninety-foot pine, about which were woven many stories of the early pioneers.” This print was illustrated by Miranda Meyers and engraved by Lossing & Barritt. Lossing & Barritt was the oldest engraving establishment in New York, established in 1838 at 71 Nassau Street. Its removal was set to commence many years after its service. This article was printed in 1862.
