Description:
An engraving that shows a view of New York from Weehawken, New Jersey. There is a carriage drawn by horses that are traveling a trail in the foreground. Towards the background is New York City across from a river. Weehawken is a township in north Hudson County, New Jersey. Located on the Hudson Waterfront, it also is settled on the Hudson Palisades overlooking the Hudson River. It was founded in 1609 by Henry Hudson. This print was lithographed by Isidore-Laurent Deroy after an original illustration by Jacques Gérard Milbert, and published by E. Ardit
Jacques-Gérard Milbert was born November 18, 1766 and was a French naturalist and artist. He studied under Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes who was a landscape painter and eventually taught drawing at the Parisian school of mines in 1795. He traveled to the United States in 1815 and stayed there for eight years where he would teach and travel the northeast. Milbert would eventually send 48 shipments of natural history specimens to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. On October 20, 1823, he returned back to France and began his teaching again. He published many of his works including his studies from the United States. On June 5, 1840, he died.
Isidore-Laurent Deroy was a painter, draftsman, and lithographer. He was born in Paris in 1797 and studied under Cassas and Félix. He exhibited his work at the Salon during 1827-1866. His children are Emile Deroy and Auguste-Victor Deroy to whom he both taught. Deroy died in 1886.
