Description:
“Original watercolor by W. T. Smedley was a very well known artist who did many illustrations In Harpers, Scribners, T. & the Century Magazine in the 1880 & 1890 He married Mary Darling daughter of E. P. Darling and lived in Bear Lake many years G. S. Mc Sept 1954” This piece was painted by William Thomas Smedley.
William Thomas Smedley was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1858. He was an American artist who studied engraving art in Philadelphia, in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and worked at a newspaper firm. In 1880, he settled in New York and in 1882 traveled with the Marquis of Lorne to Canada, where he prepared sketches for Picturesque Canada. He also made engravings that were featured as illustrations in The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia in 1886. He died on March 26, 1920.
