Title:

Disastre de Vioming

Description:

An engraving of natives burning houses during the Wyoming massacre. There is an explosion in the background as people are gathered around, watching it. The Battle of Wyoming or Wyoming Massacre took place on July 3, 1778 in the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. It was a military engagement between the Patriot militia and a force of British Loyalist soldiers and Iroquois warriors that occured at the same time as the American Revolutionary War. About 300 Patriots died, the Americans suffering a great defeat. Many were killed by the Iroquois as they fled the battlefield or were taken prisoner. Much looting and burning of buildings transpired all over the Wyoming Valley. Many inhabitants of the area fled to the Pocono Mountains, Stroudsburg, Easton, and to the Susquehanna River in Sunbury. An inaccurate newspaper report claimed that many women and children had been reportedly massacred and unfortunately taken as fact for many years after. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, by Gilbert S. McClintock, “Early French version of the scene at the massacre of July 3, 1778.” This print was illustrated by Pieter Daniel van der Burgh and engraved by Augustin François Lemaître. Pieter Daniel van der Burgh, was born in 1805 and was of Dutch descent. He was a painter in the 19th century and died in 1879. Augustin François Lemaître was born in Paris on September 20, 1797. He was a French engraver, lithographer, designer, publisher, and photographer. Over the course of his life he created many prints and drawings as well as engraved copper and steel plates. His works mainly consisted of landscapes, monuments, architecture, and people, which were depicted often during his trips across Europe. He died on February 25, 1870.

The date for the manuscript has been ascertained by comparison with a similar manuscript found on the Musées D’Art et D'Histoire web page.
