Description:
A colored etching by Hans Figura depicting some sail ships that are in a dock in a seaside town. Figura is also the artist for item 39. There are signs of graphite and pen used on top of the original colored print made by Figura.
Hans Figura was a prominent twentieth century, Austrian etcher whose work focused on North American and European landscape scenes. He was born on January 22, 1898 in Nagy-Kikinda, Hungary. Figura studied Fine Arts at Academy in Vienna, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, where the two manuscripts in our collection are placed. He was drafted as an officer of Austria during WWI and after studied medicine at the University of Vienna. Though he passed his first round of exams, Figura decided the arts were more in his passion, choosing to devote his time to painting and etching. He lived and worked in many areas of the world, from New York City, Vienna, and Austria. He married Thea and had two daughters, Ericka Kelly and Hedi Ottowitz.
The Meibohm Fine Arts’ website has more biographical information on Figura’s life and work, as well as a number of his manuscripts. They also have a portrait of the man.
The artist of the plate has been ascertained by a signature comparison with manuscripts of Hans Figura, such as the ones digitized on the Robin Prints website.
A signature comparison with a manuscript on eBay shows the similarities between Firgua’s signature on their manuscript and our own in the collection.
The date range for the manuscript has been estimated by a comparison of Figura’s other illustrations of canals in Vienna. One such manuscript, Canal Scene, Bruges, can be found digitized on the Art of the Print webpage.
