Description:
A Venetian Canal with a church in the background. The image depicts the Rio dei Mendicanti canal and the Scuola Di San Marco in Venice. There is an annotation along the bottom in italian that notes the Rio dei Mendicanti and Venice. The Scuola Di San Marco was originally built by prominent Venetian architects Pietro Lombardo, Mauro Codussi, and Bartolomeo Bon, for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, a confraternity of Venetian Christian volunteers and laypeoples. Today it serves as a hospital, facing directly into one of the city’s largest town squares.
It appears as if the same artist created this manuscript as item 38.
There are signs of graphite and pen used on top of the original colored print made by Figura.
Hans Figura was a prominent twentieth century Austrian etcher whose work focused on North American and European landscape scenes. He was born on January 22, 1898 in Nagy-Kikinda, Hungary. Figura studied Fine Arts at the Academy in Vienna, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, where the two manuscripts in our collection are placed. He was drafted as an officer of Austria during WWI and after studied medicine at the University of Vienna. Though he passed his first round of exams, Figura decided the arts were more in his passion, choosing to devote his time to painting and etching. He lived and worked in many areas of the world, from New York City, Vienna, and Austria. He married Thea and had two daughters, Ericka Kelly and Hedi Ottowitz.

The artist of the plate has been ascertained by a signature comparison with manuscripts of Hans Figura, such as the ones digitized on the Robin Prints website.
