Description:

These four prints are all from the same etching plate, etched by Slyvester Rosa Koehler. They display a tree in the center of the image as well as a landscape in the background. The lineweight varies from each print. Sylvester Rosa Koehler was a prominent curator and etchist during his life. Koehler immigrated to the states with his family from Germany after receiving the classic education, being trained as a composer of note. He later became an editor for the American Art Review, beginning his earlier eye for etchings while commissioning the for the publication. He became one of the first curators of prints at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He also compiled and translated a text called the A Treatise on Etching, in 1880, which examined teaching and mastering the intricacies of the craft. Other works by Sylvester Rosa Koehler can be seen on the Boston Museum of Fine Art’s website.
