Thomas Ferrier Atherton of Wilkes-Barre
Description:
This is a colored print of Thomas Ferrier Atherton with a brief handwritten description written by Melanie Atherton Updegraff that states, “Thomas Ferrier Atherton who in his time became president of what is now the First National bank member of the Crackers + Cheese Club, which became the Westmoreland Club.” It is written further that Thomas Ferrier Atherton was the son of Elisha Atherton and brother of Sarah Atherton Henry. He resided in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The transcript writes that Thomas had no children and was very fond of Melanie Atherton Updegraff’s father, later taking his name.
Melanie Atherton Updegraff was born June 11, 1886 to Thomas Henry Atherton and Melanie Parke Atherton. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1908 and later on studied art in Florence, Italy. Soon after she decided to take up missionary work and traveled to India. She and her partner David Benjamin Updegraff married in 1914, and set up a mission station in Nipani in 1923. They eventually returned to Ardmore, Pennsylvania where they spent the rest of their lives. Melanie died in 1973.
