Title:
Colonel Barre.
Description:
This portrait of Barre de-emphasizes his blind right eye and bullet wound but it may be a good character likeness: serious, steady, and -perhaps- simple. In what is now called charisma, Barre and Wilkes were at opposite ends of the scale. This print was published by the London Magazine.
The London Magazine was a series of six publishings that all focused on the arts, literature, and other miscellaneous subjects. It was founded in 1732 and later closed 52 years later in 1785.
The subject of this piece, Isaac Barré was born on October 15, 1726 and was an Anglo-Irish politician and soldier. “He earned distinction serving with the British Army during the Seven Years' War and later became a prominent Member of Parliament, where he was a vocal supporter of William Pitt.” He coined the term “Sons of Liberty” that referred to American colonists who opposed the British government. He died on July 20, 1802.
