Tombeaux des Indiens Sioux.

Description:

A historical lithograph by Eguene le Roux, after a painting by Karl Bodmer, depicting a scene of native graves from the Sioux tribe. The Sioux are mourning the dead as a body is lifted into a tree. The print was published by Bertauts in Paris. Johann Carl Bodmer, born February 11, 1809 was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, painter, illustrator, and hunter. He is better known as Karl Bodmer in his literature and paintings. The change of signature was likely due to the birth of his son, Charles-Henry Barbizon, that he began to sign his works K Bodmer. Bodmer was also well known in Germany for his watercolours, drawings, and aquatints of cities and landscapes of the Rhine, Mosel, and Lahn rivers. Born in 1807, Louis Eugène Leroux was a 19th-century painter from Caen, France. He died in Paris in 1863. Bertauts was a French lithographic printer, most noted for his hand in tonal printing. He had a short partnership with Petit 1838-41. The British Museum has some of their works under the tag Petit & Bertauts. The date for the lithograph has been ascertained by a comparison with a similar lithograph digitized on the Michael Laird Rare Books & Manuscripts’ website.
