Title:
James Butler, Second Duke of Ormonde
Description:
This is a mezzotint of James Butler, Second Duke of Ormonde. This piece was originally painted by Godfrey Kneller and mezzotinted by John Smith. James Butler was born at Dublin Castle on April 29, 1665. He was an Irish statesman, soldier, and was the third of the Kilcash branch of the family to inherit the earldom of the Second Duke of Ormond. He was raised protestant and served in the campaign to put down the Monmouth Rebellion during the Williamite War in Ireland. He died in 1715.
John Smith was born at Daventry, Northamptonshire around 1652 and was an English mezzotint engraver and print seller. He often worked with Godfrey Kneller and was one of the most well known mezzotint artists during the 17th and 18th centuries. Smith died around 1742.
Sir Godfrey Kneller was a German-British painter born on August 8, 1646. He served as a court painter to English and British monarchs, and was a leading portraitist in England during the Stuart and Georgian eras. Kneller also painted Sir Isaac Newton, foreign monarchs like Louis XIV of France and visitors to England like Michael Shen Fu-Tsung. He died on October 17, 1723.
