Etchings of French Officers

Description:

An etching by Henry Bryan Hall depicting “The Chevalier De La Luzerne,” in 1870. Henry Bryan Hall was born in London on May 11, 1808, and was a stipple engraver and painter of portraits. Earlier in life he apprenticed with Benjamin Smith and Henry Meyer. This later led him to work for Henry Thomas Ryall who was referred to as the “Portrait and Historical Engraver to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria.” In 1850, he founded the firm H. B. Hall and Sons after settling in New York. His practice flourished and produced engravings and published portraits. Many of these portraits were of celebrities that originated from American colonial and revolutionary history. He died in Morrisania, New York on April 25, 1884. The etching depicts Anne-Cesar La Luzerne, an eighteenth century French soldier who played a pivotal role in the development of the Continental Congress as a diplomat between the two countries. He became an ambassador to the Court of St. James.
