Description:

This is a mezzotint of Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne. This piece was originally painted by Godfrey Kneller and mezzotinted by John Faber Jr. Thomas Pelham-Holles was the 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne and 1st Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme born on July 21, 1693. He was an English Whig and served as Prime Minister of Great Britain during the 18th century. He served as a protege under Robert Walpole for over 20 years and served as a Secretary of State for more than 30 years. He died November 17, 1768. John Faber Jr was an engraver, portraitist, and miniature painter who was born in Amsterdam around 1695. He was the son of John Faber, who was also an engraver. After he and his family settled in England, he learned drawing and mezzotint engraving from his father. He eventually enrolled at the academy in St Martin’s Lane. Faber was a well known engraver as Sir Godfrey Kneller and Peter Lely has him make prints of their paintings. He died in 1756. Sir Godfrey Kneller was a German-British painter born on August 8, 1646. He served as a court painter to English and British monarchs, and was a leading portraitist in England during the Stuart and Georgian eras. Kneller also painted Sir Isaac Newton, foreign monarchs like Louis XIV of France and visitors to England like Michael Shen Fu-Tsung. He died on October 17, 1723.
