Description:

This portrait is of an elderly African American man in ragged clothes, likely sitting in his house with a banjo in his arms. This is the same image as 20j and it’s printed on wax paper. This piece was illustrated by Thomas Hovenden and engraved by William Miller. Thomas Hovenden was born in Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland on December 28, 1840. He was an artist and teacher who spent most of his life in the United States. He apprenticed under a carver and gilder and pursued his studies at the Cork School of Design. His works exhibited that of realism, quiet family scenes, and narrative subjects including African Americans. William Miller was born in 1796 and studied in Edinburgh and London. He later worked in Edinburgh and engraved landscapes and figures. He died in 1882.
