Title:
Portrait of Joseph Hume
Description:
This is a print of an oil painting portrait of Joseph Hume. It was painted by Sir Henry Raeburn.
Sir Henry Raeburn was born in Stockbridge, Edinburg, Scotland on March 4, 1756. He was a portrait painter and served as King George IV’s portrait painter in Scotland. Orphaned at a young age, he was supported by his older brother William and received education for Heriot’s Hospital. He apprenticed as a goldsmith at fifteen and later produced miniature portraits. He extended his practice to oil painting and was given portraits to copy. He learned the skill well and decided to devote himself fully to painting. He died in Edinburg, Scotland at the age of 67 on July 8, 1823.
Joseph Hume was born September 1, 1775. His father, Daniel Hume was a Scottish advocate, judge and legal scholar. His work had an overwhelming influence on Scots criminal and private law. Referred to as Baron Hume that helped distinguish him from his uncle, David Hume. Joseph Hume died in 1829.
