Title:

William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield

Description:

A mezzotint portrait of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. The piece depicts him facing forward in a chair. This piece was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after a painting by Joshua Reynolds at an earlier date. William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield was born March 2, 1705 to Scottish nobility. He was a barrister, politician, and judge that was noted for his reform of the English law. He involved himself in politics in 1742 being elected as a Parliament member in Boroughbridge, and appointment as Solicitor General Many of his decisions reflected that of abolishing slavery. He died March 20, 1793. Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter born in Plympton, Devon on July 16, 1723, who primarily produced portraits. “John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century.” He focused on the idealization of the imperfect in painting and was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of the Arts. In 1769 he was knighted by Geroge III. Reynolds died on February 23, 1792. Francesco Bartolozzi was born in Florence on September 21, 1727. He was an Italian painter, but most of his success was gained in London. He is said to have popularized the method of crayon engraving . He originally set out to follow his father’s footsteps of being a gold and silversmith, but was placed under supervision of Ignazio Hugford and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti who taught him to paint. He developed this skill for three years and traveled to Venice where he studied engraving. He did this for six years with Joseph Wagner and eventually set up his own workshop. He died in Lisbon on March 7, 1815.
