This is an engraved portrait of Dr. John Moore. This piece was engraved by George Keating after a painting by Thomas Lawrence. John Moore was born on October 10, 1729 in Stirling. He was a Scottish physician and travel author. He is credited with editing the works of Tobias Smollett. He apprenticed under Dr. John Gordon in Glasgow from 1745 to 1747. He earned his medical degree there and served as a Surgeon’s Mate with the army in Flanders during the Seven Years’ War. He later became a surgeon to the household of the British ambassador in Paris. Sir Thomas Lawrence was an English, self taught draftsman and portrait painter born on April 13, 1769. He was the fourth president of the Royal Academy and a child prodigy growing up. At the age of 18 he was well versed in portraiture and soon established his reputation receiving his first royal commission in 1790 of Queen Charlotte. He died on January 7, 1830. George Keating was born in 1762 and was an engraver and bookseller. Many of his works consisted of portraiture. He died in 1842.
