Title:

Professor Richard Owen of the British Museum

Description:

A portrait depicting Richard Owen of the British Museum holding what seems to be an ammonite fossil. This piece was created by Charles Algernon Tompkins. Sir Richard Owen was born in Lancaster, England on July 20, 1804. He was a biologist, comparative anatomist, and paleontologist. He had a gift for interpreting fossils and was considered a great naturalist. He is also credited with his vast research and for coining the name “Dinosauria” meaning "Terrible Reptile" or "Fearfully Great Reptile.” His theories often aligned with Charles Darwin on evolution. In 1839, Owen became the first president of Microscopical Society of London. He died December 18, 1892. Charles Algernon Tompkins was a British engraver, mezzotinter, and printmaker, born in 1821. He died in 1905. More of his works can be found on the National Portrait Gallery website.
