Title:

Jean Baptiste Santeul: Chanoine Regulier de l’Abbaye Royal de St. Victor

Description:

An engraving of Jean Baptiste Santeul who served at the Royal Abbey of Saint Victor. An annotation describes that he was born in Paris on 12 May 1630 and died in Dijon on 5 August 1697. This print was created by Étienne-Jehandier Desrochers circa 1700. Étienne-Jehandier Desrochers was born in Lyon in 1668 and was a French 18th century engraver. He is well known for his small portraits. He died in Paris in 1741. The subject of this piece, Jean-Baptiste de Santeul was a French poet who primarily wrote in Latin and was educated at the College of Clermont. He was taught under Jesuit Father Coffard where he studied rhetoric. Entering the Abbey of St. Victor in Paris in 1653, this became his profession in the coming year. Writing under the name Santolius Victorinus, he became a regular canon, writing hymns and poems. Many of these were later published in the Cluniac Breviary of 1686 as well as the Paris Breviaries of 1680 and 1736. Many of these hymns were eventually translated into English.
