Description:
An engraving depicting a posing John Sullivan.
The subject of this piece, John Sullivan was an American general in the Revolutionary War, born on February 17, 1740. “He was a delegate in the Continental Congress where he signed the Continental Association, the third governor of New Hampshire, and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire.” In the Continental Army, he served as a major general and as a governor of New Hampshire. He commanded a scorched earth campaign in 1779, referred to as the Sullivan Expedition, that went against the Iroquois towns that had taken up arms against the American revolutionaries. He died on January 23, 1795.
