Description:
An engraving portrait of Voltaire that shows multiple enlightenment symbols, including a compass. An angel is crowing Voltaire with a wreath. For more information on Jean Michel Loitard’s collections, visit The Met’s Website. This print was engraved by Jean-Joseph Balechou after adrawing by Jean-Étienne Liotard at an earlier date.
Possibly the artist of this piece, Jean-Étienne Liotard was born on December 22, 1702 and was a Swiss painter, art connoisseur, and dealer. Known for his use of pastels and subjects of portraits, he was a Huguenot and citizen of the Republic of Geneva. He spent most of his career in the capitals of Europe where he painted most of his portraits. Other cities he worked in were Rome, Istanbul, Paris, Vienna, and London.
Jean-Joseph Balechou was born is Arles on July 11, 1715 and was a French engraver. He died in Avignon on August 18, 1765.
The subject of this piece, born on November 21, 1694, François-Marie Arouet was a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, satirist, and historian. He was most well known as Voltaire. He criticized Christianity, more specifically the Roman Catholic Church, and slavery, all by exemplifying his wit. He stood for freedom of speech, religion, and separation of church and state, He worked in various mediums of literary form such as plays, poems, novels, essays, histories, and also scientific expositions. He has written over 20,000 letters and 2,000 books in his lifetime. He died on May 30, 1778.
