Title:
The Site of Azilum
Description:
This is a photograph by an unknown creator after an oil painting depicting the landscape of Azilum. This piece was painted by Julius O. Montalant. Wyomissing is located in Berks County, near Reading, Pennsylvania. This place was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The name of Wyomissing comes from the Delaware language meaning “peaceful/longfish/pike.” In 1685, much of the County was transferred from the Native Americans to William Penn. One of the earliest industries in the area was the Evans Grist Mill. This building still stands at the corner of Old Mill Road and Old Wyomissing Road.
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “View from the east side of the river, looking down on the fields where the village of Azilum was built in the 1790’s and of which there is now little trace. The fields on the mountain on the far side of the river, just at the right of the center of the picture, have today the same outlines as shown by Montalant more than ninety years ago.”
Julius O. Montalant was born in Virginia in 1823 and was best known for his exotic landscape paintings. These works were often inspired by his travels on navy ships. He has lived in Philadelphia, Rome, Italy, and Europe, returning to New York mid 1859. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Union and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1851-1861. He died in Rome, Italy in 1878.
